I don’t know about you, but I’m fairly new to essential oils. I’ve known about them for over a decade and I keep some on hand for specific uses, but I really had no idea how useful and beneficial they are until my mother decided to become a certified essential oil practitioner. Wow was I surprised and impressed by some of the amazing properties and uses of these concentrated plant essences. It’s a little sad that our medical system doesn’t promote or advocate for their use as side effects are very low or even non-existent when used properly. All essential oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil before use and a little goes a long way. You can use them in bathwater, cleaning solutions, body care products, tea, food, and many other applications, but all essential oils should be certified organic and free from chemicals. Here is a list of the top 7 essential oils everyone should keep on hand.
#1 Turmeric – this oil is high in turmerone and curcumin which have antitumor and anticancer properties. It also boost stem cells in the body which help repair and renew the body to slow down the aging process.
#2 Frankincense – this oil comes in several types which offer different benefits. Boswelia carteri and Boswelia sacra have been shown to fight breast cancer, reduce depression, improve insomnia and anxiety, reduce brain inflammation and brain fog. Boswelia frereana helps fight gingivitis cancer and depression. All forms of Frankincense are anti-inflammatory.
#3 Holy Basil – this oil is very popular in Ayurvedic medicine. It’s an adaptogen which helps lower cholesterol, reduce stress, and balance cortisol levels which is an aging hormone. High cortisol is linked to obesity, diabetes and other chronic illness. It also contains a compound called eugenol which has anti-inflammatory properties. Holy Basil oil is great for brain function, balances blood sugar and has been proven to inhibit Mersa and Ecoli as well as improve adrenal function and balance hormones.
#4 Peppermint – This oil contains menthol and menthone which are excellent for soothing muscle aches, headaches, focus and clarity. Peppermint oil can boost energy levels and help people who suffer from IBS and other digestive issues.
#5 Clary Sage – This oil is involved in some ground-breaking medical studies that show its effectiveness in helping to improve PCOS, menopause, hormone balance, and blood pressure. It is antimicrobial and can also help calm the mind and body. In Chinese medicine sage is known to support and energize key hormones in both males and females. Do not use during pregnancy.
#6 Ginger – This oil contains zingiberene, a powerful anti-inflammatory. Ginger can help block pain when inhaled. It is used to treat arthritis, colitis, heart disease and digestive issues. Ginger oil can also help soothe painful joints and improve immune function, colds, flu, and candida.
#7 Lavender – This essential oil is great for skin tone and clarity. It can improve sleep, blood sugar, blood pressure and anxiety. A new study found that lavender is good for the pancreas, liver, and kidneys. It can help people who suffer from diabetes, depression, PTSD and Alzheimer’s due to its compounds linalyl acetate and linalool.
Always make sure to dilute any essential oil with the proper amount of carrier oil when applying to skin or taking internally. Talk to a certified essential oils expert for contraindications, dosages and other questions you may have. Always seek medical advice before taking anything new and make sure you have accurate instructions and information. Quality of essential oils is very important, especially for internal use. Always verify oils are certified organic and chemical free. This article does not diagnose, treat or offer medical advice to anyone for any reason and is for informational purposes only.
