6 Tips to develop resilience and serenity during times of challenge and change

2020 has been a turbulent year of intense conflict, unimaginable challenge, and chaotic change, but it has also been a year of deeper awareness, inner clarity, unprecedented awakening, and unexpected miracles. Conflict, challenge, and change have always been a part of life, but this year has seen more than our fair share of each and has left millions more people desperate for intervention, support, and assistance. It can seem as if we have no control over our lives and what we experience, but in fact it’s just the opposite. We have absolute control over how we perceive and react to events in our lives and those two variables have all the power in the world to shape our future experiences and our lives. Here are 6 tips that can help you get centered, develop resilience, and stay serene no matter what’s going on in your life or the world around you.

1 Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

Developing a mindfulness and meditation practice will help you release your need to obsess over unhappy situations, scenarios, and outcomes. Our fear-based, ego mind likes to focus on worst case scenarios and pull us down the rabbit hole to all of our deepest fears being realized, but those things almost never happen. Practicing meditation – guided or self-led and being mindful of our thoughts and mental movies can help us move out of fear and anxiety mode and into calm assurance that all is well in this moment and all will be well.

It helps bring our attention and focus to the present moment where we can make self-supporting, inspired choices and decisions about how we want our day to unfold. It also enables us to recognize that when things don’t go the way we had planned or hoped we can handle the unexpected with grace, dignity, and integrity knowing that everything happens for a reason, even if we cannot fully see or grasp it immediately. It gives us the clarity and consciousness to look for or decide what meaning to place on events and circumstances in our life. Hint: The bigger the challenge the deeper and more meaningful the purpose behind it is.

Life is always for us if we go with the flow and let it lead us to our highest good instead of trying to push and fight our way to what we think will make us happy or get us what we deserve.

2. Listen to Your Body

Meditation and mindfulness are an excellent foundation for resilience and serenity, but if you’re seeking more clarity and faster results look no further than your own body. Your body is constantly sending you critical messages. They are often easily overlooked because we don’t understand the language of the body. Your body whispers to you with tingles, tightness, discomfort, laziness, exuberance, eagerness, calmness, relaxation, and many other physical expressions. When those don’t work it resorts to pain or pleasure impulses and when that still doesn’t get your attention you may wind up with a physical malady or illness.

There is a simple process that I show clients to use in order to access their body wisdom. Think about a situation or question you have and then ask your body to give you a signal about it. Wait and pay attention to any physical feelings or emotions that arise in the next few minutes. Do you feel a sense of overwhelm, tiredness, fear, or a sudden pain in your gut or back? Maybe you get a tingle of excitement or a sudden burst of energy or enthusiasm. Those are all signals from your body letting you know when something feels wrong or right, bad or good for you. Your body knows your deepest needs and desires that will provide your greatest good and your body can guide you in the right direction if you let it.

You can hear and feel your body wisdom easier when you quiet your “monkey mind”. The great thing about body wisdom is that it’s very accurate. You just need to tune in and understand how to interpret the messages.

3. Follow Your Path of Joy

Doing things that bring you joy and make you feel good about yourself and life in general. When we are constantly doing things that we feel obligated or expected to do and nothing that brings us pure joy or enthusiasm we are cutting ourselves off from the flow of goodness, abundance, and prosperity that is our birth right. Life was never meant to be a penance or a constant struggle with no rest and no pleasure.

Too often people get sucked into relationships, situations, and jobs that resonate with old, unhealthy, unbeneficial beliefs and childhood programming and find it almost impossible to see their way out of such places. They often turn to alcohol or drugs to numb the pain and fear, but those things never give them what they truly long for and wind up creating more problems. When you make a decision to start doing something that makes you truly happy it opens the door for more happiness and better opportunities to flow into your life.

Something as simple as spending 30 minutes writing, coloring, painting, dancing, or singing each day can have a profound impact on your health and wellbeing. What did you love to do as a child? Run around in the rain, lay on the grass and look up at the clouds or stars, take a class, write a song or poem, make a funny video, teach people something you’re good at. Life is too short to take it all so seriously and to work hard for someone else’s passion. Everyone needs an outlet to express their creativity, passion, and unique genius. It’s how we grow and expand our gifts and talents. Everyone has at least one and they were meant to be used and shared.

4. Embrace Impermanence

Many people want life to stay the same, because it’s familiar and comfortable. Unfortunately familiar and comfortable are not always good or beneficial. Quite the contrary, trying to hold on to the old ways, concepts, beliefs, people, situations, and experiences is like trying to stop your body from aging or life from moving forward. It may appear you’ve got things under control but under the surface a million different processes and events are being orchestrated to keep you growing and evolving.

COVID-19 is a great example of humanity’s desire for sameness. We are experiencing immense turmoil and rapid change, but so many people can’t wait to get back to the old normal. We will never get back to the way things were before because life is constantly evolving and changing. The more we fight and resist change the harder it is to get through it and create something new and better.

When we learn to embrace impermanence and accept that everything is uncertain, nothing is guaranteed it becomes much easier and clearer how to create something new, better and more valuable than what we had before. We begin to look toward change with enthusiasm and awe because we know it offers us greater opportunity to grow, imagine, and create something far more amazing than what we currently have, do, and are.

5. Practice Self-Care and self-love

When I talked about self-love and self-care I often see people shut down or tune out because it’s something very foreign to most of us. Most societies and cultures tell us we must always put others’ needs above ourselves and thinking about ourselves first is selfish or immoral. This is another misguided belief that has been perpetuated for far too long. No one on this planet can constantly give of themselves without giving to themselves. Yes, you can do it for some time, but eventually it will lead to anger, resentment, depression, dis-ease, illness, and even death. The truth is that when we learn to love and care for ourselves we fill ourselves up with the emotional and energetic reserves we need to be of the highest service and benefit to those around us.

Something as simple as taking a hot bath with some soothing music for 30 minutes each night without worrying about the kids, work, laundry, bills, or whose doing what right now is a wonderful way to start practicing self-care. Taking a walk outside each day for 30 – 60 minutes is an even better way to renew and restore yourself. The earth is very healing and the magnetic frequencies from the earth have a soothing, balancing effect. If you can actually walk around barefoot outside that is even more effective. Our body is a conductor of the electromagnetic impulses of the planet, but much of the footwear we use blocks or negates the benefits.

When you start doing things to support and nurture yourself you give signals to the universe that you deserve good and love in your life and you actually start attracting more good and love to yourself. Another simple effective way of expressing your love and appreciation for yourself is actually saying kind things to yourself daily. Loving self-talk can really transform your relationship with yourself and with everyone else in your life. It also has powerful effects on your work performance, your health, and your ability to see the good in life and in people.

6. Affirm Your Desires

In order to attain serenity in times of challenge and change it’s very important to focus your attention and intention on what you desire to see and experience, regardless of what actually appears to be going on around you. Appearances can be deceiving and the collective thought forms can only have an impact on you if you feed them and buy into them as your truth. Spending 5 minutes every hour or whenever you catch yourself falling back into negative thought patterns and behaviors can make the difference between clinical depression and feeling like you have the skills and emotional strength to meet any challenge and overcome any obstacle.

An added bonus is that like energy attracts like energy. Thought forms are energy and emotions are energy magnified exponentially. The more you focus on what you desire, using your emotions to really feel and experience those desires as your reality, kinda of like virtual reality, the faster things will shift in your life to help you manifest those desires into your physical reality.

Another practice that adds to the speed and success of your desires is an attitude of gratitude. Finding anything and everything you can be grateful for each day, or filling your heart with gratitude for the desires you know are coming to fruition in the Field of all possibility will supercharge your desires and bring them into the physical plane much faster. It takes practice and conscious awareness to recognize when you’re letting your mind take control and replay all the old movies that keep you stuck in fear, lack, anxiety, and limitation, but when you choose to become the master of your mind instead of letting your mind master you, your potential for goodness and greatness becomes limitless.
